Lex Barberio is a queer artist from Miami whose work explores the intersection of photography, collage, and experimental printing. With a decade in advertising and a lifetime in art, Lex uses photography as a medium for storytelling—crafting narratives that extend beyond the frame. Their work goes beyond simply capturing an image; it is about creating an experience, often pushing photography into the physical world through experimental printing and material-based presentations.
Lex’s background in advertising and fine art informs every aspect of their creative practice. After graduating at the top of their class in Photography and in Creative Direction from the Miami Ad School in 2014, they received the ASMP South Florida Daryl Strawser Award and began working in the commercial world. Through agencies, they have contributed to campaigns for brands like ESPN, Cheetos, Pepsi, Foot Locker, Lululemon, Barbie, and Hot Ones, bringing a fresh artistic edge to advertising through creative direction. Notably, they wrote and created a commercial with Anthony Edwards for Foot Locker and Adidas in 2024. Their artistic vision shapes their commercial work, while their experience in advertising expands their approach to fine art—bridging the gap between conceptual storytelling and visual branding.
Lex’s work has been exhibited in solo shows at the Museum of Contemporary Art Long Island, the High Line in NYC, and during World Pride. They have also participated in group exhibitions, including Lehman College at La MaMa Galleria and The Raw Beauty Project at ACA Galleries in New York City. Their work was recognized by NBC in “12 Queer Artists Whose Work is Making Us Pay Attention.” In 2021, Suffolk County, NY, issued a proclamation honoring Lex’s contributions to the queer community, highlighting their series The Ambisextrous and Understanding Me for breaking the binary and illuminating non-binary and trans experiences.
Beyond their own practice, Lex is committed to fostering creativity in others. With deep experience in both creative direction and photography, they have a strong history of mentoring emerging artists and helping them refine their vision. In 2023, Lex taught photography at Miami Ad School, emphasizing not only technical skills but also the importance of developing a unique artistic voice. Whether through teaching, one-on-one mentorship, or creative collaboration, Lex is dedicated to guiding others in unlocking their full creative potential.
After spending the past decade in NYC, Lex recently returned to Miami, where they live with their wife, Kelsey, and their two cats, Ace and Arla. Together, Lex and Kelsey share a love for adventure, traveling the globe and drawing inspiration from the places and people they encounter along the way.
