CREATING A NEW LOOK WITH
People come to me for photos when they want to make a statement and I absolutely love that. When people ask me what my specialty is, I tell them it’s amplifying personalities, places, objects, and vibes through my point of view. I wanted to share this story about Austin because I think it’s a great example of what it is I actually do.
A SHOT FROM AUSTIN’S ORIGINAL PORTFOLIO
I met Austin earlier this year, he told me he was an aspiring model and actor who had just moved from North Carolina to New York City and reached out because he wanted fresh photos to apply to various modeling agencies in the city.
He asked me for advice on what we should shoot so I took a look at his existing portfolio which was mostly made up of headshots. The shots in his book were good photos, but in a competitive environment like New York, you need statement photos, so to round out the existing work I suggested we shoot an editorial style set at my home studio.

We focused on making his look “expensive”.
I had him bring some outfits and out of those we picked the clothing that added the most to the elegance of the shots. We styled his hair and used dramatic lighting and shadowing to accentuate his features and make the poses more dynamic.
We tied it all up with a contrasty black and white treatment that gave the photos a touch of nostalgia and mystery.
